Our exquisite Agarwood Essence features our rare Agarwood Essential Oil steam distilled from the ethically harvested dark, aromatic heartwood of Aquilaria ssp. evergreen trees growing in a wild, private tropical forest plantation in India, along with a precious array of other natural woody, resinous and musky essential oils. Agarwood is also known as Aloeswood, Eaglewood, Kyara, Ood, Oudh or Ud, and many other names, depending on the wood’s grade and country of origin.
Agarwood is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees (large evergreens native to southeast Asia) when they become infected by a parasitic fungus (Phialophora parasitica and others). Prior to infection, the heartwood is odourless, relatively light and pale coloured; as the infection progresses, the trees attack the affected wood by producing an oleoresin that, after some years, becomes dark and highly aromatic. With its sensual, radiant, bitter-sweet, leathery, animalic notes, Agarwood is highly esteemed for its unrivaled aroma.
Originally from Southeast Asia, Agarwood formed the basis of the legendary Arabian perfume called Oud – it is one of the oldest and most famous incense materials of the Far East. A perfumer’s guilty pleasure, Oud Oil, is without a doubt the most refined olfactory merchandise available anywhere. Revered and esteemed by many cultures, Agarwood Oil is an exquisite addition to the natural perfumer’s palette and is often used in sacred oil blends and for ceremonial anointing.
